Halle began this Independent Study class seeking to develop her eye for detail as a painter. Her inital project (​whither) ​started as in-depth explorations of texture in mundane objects. She sought out objects around her that, though simple and easy to overlook, held a certain delicate beauty, and represented them isolated from their environments, as to develop a deeper understading and appreciation for them through her layered and detailed painting process. However, the coronavirus pandemic hitting disrupted Halle's entire life as a student as well as an artist. She felt only right to attempt to represent the struggles of today’s world within her work. Therefore, in ​outbreak,​ Halle sought to portray the anxiety, confusion, and loneliness of the times we are living in using a similar layered painting technique.
