Self Portrait

Modeled clay portraits (cast hydrocal) - Assignment covers class, individual instruction and techniques in additive clay modeling process, with transfer to negative waste mold and positive cast process, plaster repair, finishing, procedures including general patina finishing with bronzing application. Emphasis will be on rendering presence, and form in sculpture through observation and memory. Students will explore the relationship between materials, process and subject matter through the making of introspective self-portraits in sculpture. Projects will stress resemblance, personality and psychology that reflect emotional states and perspectives of the self.

Shoes Out of Tape

Assignment covers direct pattern construction techniques. Concepts: object shoe installation, representation, observation, exaggeration, scale, pattern construction, detail improvisation. Homework assignment. Students will recreate a pair of shoes in masking tape. The shoes should be the same exact scale of the model shoes and be clearly defined in all aspects of form, resemblance and personality and style. Articulation of details is a must using tape only to build up and stabilize sections as you create the overall design.

Geometric Abstraction

Project is designed to teach and develop formal and conceptual metal sculpture making skills. Technical demonstrations and advice will be given throughout the project. Assignment covers a range of cutting, and forming techniques and processes including tool use and steel fabrication equipment use with focus on mig gas welding. Emphasis will be on 3-dimensional use of structure and spatial relationships of linear form using interconnected balanced shapes and design concepts.
